Synopsis

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the 2021 theatrical prequel to the main Jujutsu Kaisen series, adapting Gege Akutami's prototype manga of the same name and serving as the emotional and thematic foundation for everything the main series subsequently built upon. The film follows Yuta Okkotsu, a high school student haunted — quite literally — by Rika Orimoto, his childhood friend who died in a traffic accident and returned as a monstrous special-grade Cursed Spirit bound to Yuta with terrifying possessive love. Rika's power, which activates in response to any threat to Yuta, is so catastrophically destructive that the Jujutsu sorcerer organization debates executing Yuta on the grounds that he represents an uncontrollable danger. Instead, the prodigy teacher Satoru Gojo recruits him into Tokyo Jujutsu High, placing him in a class with Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda — each of whom represents a different relationship to the sorcerer world and its inherited hierarchies. The film uses the Tokyo Jujutsu High setting to explore the institutional culture that the main series complicates: the prejudices encoded in the sorcerer family system, the question of what makes a curse and what makes a connection, and whether power rooted in grief and love can be separated from the grief without destroying the love. The antagonist Suguru Geto — Gojo's former best friend turned ideological enemy — provides the film's philosophical conflict: his plan to massacre non-sorcerers on New Year's Eve forces a confrontation not just physically but over what kind of world Jujutsu sorcery is meant to protect. The film's ending, and the truth about Rika's curse, is among the most emotionally precise resolutions in recent anime cinema.
