Synopsis

Death Note: The Last Name is the direct sequel to the 2006 live-action film and concludes the battle between Kira and L in spectacular fashion — but with a radically different ending from the manga that divided and surprised fans in equal measure. Picking up where the first film ended, Light Yagami continues his dual existence as both Kira and a member of L's investigation team, using his inside position to manipulate the investigation. The film introduces Misa Amane, who has made the deadly Shinigami Eyes deal, and the corporate conspiracy of the Yotsuba Group, streamlining the manga's complex Yotsuba arc into a focused thriller. Director Shusuke Kaneko makes bold narrative choices throughout, most notably in the climax, where the film diverges entirely from Ohba's original ending. Tatsuya Fujiwara and Ken'ichi Matsuyama again deliver the film's emotional center — their scenes together simmer with barely suppressed mutual suspicion. The film is longer than its predecessor at 141 minutes but rarely feels padded, building to a conclusion that some fans prefer for its poetic justice. The Last Name stands as proof that adaptation can honor source material while also taking it somewhere genuinely unexpected.
